Peter DiSilvio, a graduate of Hofstra University, works for Ed Mangano’s campaign for 2009 County Executive for Nassau County. A core piece of his platform is something relatively new to larger politics and even newer to local politics. DiSilvio manages 11 pages of content, including Mangano’s Twitter, Facebook, Wikipedia, and LinkedIn accounts. DiSilvio described his job as increasing Mangano’s “digital footprint.” How he ended up working for Ed Mangano, though, speaks to the burgeoning nature of social media as a platform tool. "I went in there to get some literature and realized they wanted someone to help and I showed them that I could do it. I got a team together and we were off and running,” DiSilvio explained. DiSilvio maintained that the effect is clearly noticeable. "It's allowing Ed to get his message out to everybody and not just a ‘certain type of person,’ which is great.” As for how clear Mangano’s digital access is, DiSilvio continued to say, “From his page you can link to the other pages of content we have. He's out there to help people and that comes through. He answers people’s questions on Facebook and it totally eliminates any kind of edge [his opponent Tom] Suozzi might have as incumbent." As for whether or not Mangano is only generating buzz because of his online presence, DiSilvio denied any online crutch. “He already has an edge, but social networking gives people the ability to meet Ed as the candidate. You're getting Ed direct and unfiltered. There's no TV in the way, no barriers." At the center of all of Mangano’s social media platforming is something that all politicians aim for. “[With his websites] You can get a really full grasp of what he’s about and what he wants to do for Nassau County." |
