Sen. Charles Schumer (D - N.Y.) announced his support for a new bill today in an effort to stem the effects of the Supreme Court’s controversial decision on corporate spending in elections. According to a press release, Sen. Al Franken (D - Minn.), Sen. Evan Bayh (D - Ind.), Sen. Russ Feingold (D - Wisc.), and Sen. Ron Wyden (D - Ore.) joined Schumer to sponsor this bill, the “Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections” Act  that they pledged to pass by July 4.

"The Court’s decision stacks the deck against the average American even more. Our bill will follow the money,” said Schumer.of the DISCLOSE Act.

The main target of the bill will not be to contradict the Supreme Court’s decision, but rather to make the donations from corporations public knowledge.

“While no bill can reverse the Court’s mistake, we need to make sure the public can follow the money,” said Senator Feingold, a co-sponsor of the 2002 McCain-Feingold Act, also known as the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act.

The DISCLOSE Act would further require CEOs to appear in video advertisements stating that they approved the message; the same standard political candidates are currently held to.

House Republican Minority Leader John Boehner (R - Ohio) rejected the bill as, “not serious” but the bill does have some initial bipartisan support. Rep. Walter Jones (R - N.C.) has expressed his support for the House version of the bill, which will be up for debate May 6.
