The sun is beaming, the kids are done with school for the year and vacations are set for the summer.

But, wait, what do the kids want to do?

Hofstra University has what you're looking for with their Sports Academy summer program. The camp, which offers sports clinics ranging from basketball, baseball, cross county, and lacrosse looks to not just allow kids to have fun while learning, but also looks to teach what them it takes to be a Division 1 athlete.

“We feel that every camper is a potential student at our wonderful university campus,” says camp director Terrence G. Ryan. “It lets young people witness many of the great things the university has to offer,” he added.

Hofstra Pride senior guard Charles Jenkins agrees. “Many young kids don't have older brothers or older people to talk to or ask questions,” said Jenkins.  “I think it gives me the chance to tell kids what I've been through and mistakes I made so they will be able to learn from me,” he added.

Hofstra’s summer camps are offered in three separate summer sessions. The first one starts on Tuesday, July 6. The sports academies are offered to students in grades 3-12 who have a serious interest in enhancing their game and in bettering their skills. The camps are run by both current student-athletes and local sports athletes within the community.

“Our local players and our staff that work our camps help us financially and it provides an opportunity for us to give back our knowledge to the community,” said Pride baseball coach Patrick J. Anderson.

“Going to camp, for me, as a kid was very fun,” said Jenkins. ”I had the chance to compete against other kids from all over the world, which was a great thing for me, because it made me work harder knowing that there are some great basketball players around,” he added.

Let’s hope that your child has a very similar experience. You don’t want to miss it.
