Brothers Elijah and Timothy John, students at A.B.G. Shultz Middle School in Hempstead, were recognized as runner-up winners on April 10 in the 100 Black Men of Long Island African American Academic Challenge (History Bowl Challenge).

Students, faculty and administrators give an insider's point of view on what the underlying issues are within Hempstead High School. Many of them agree that there isn't a racial tension within the school, but rather a territorial divide. The board hopes its proposed alternative program will put an end to student violence in Hempstead High School.

Students, parents, faculty and administrators are becoming impatient as the Hempstead School District’s Board of Education struggles to find a permanent solution to end student violence in Hempstead High School. After a violent cafeteria brawl in March left eight students injured and 17 arrested, school officials have proposed the creation of an alternative program for troubled students.

Town of Hempstead Hosts "Passport in the USA" Day Before Passport Fees Are Raised | Print |  E-mail

A passport is essential for any U.S. citizen looking to leave and return to the country. On Sat. March 27th, the Town of Hempstead Town Clerk’s Office is giving residents a chance to obtain a passport before the fees are raised, which is expected to be within the next few months.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., residents of Hempstead can stop by the office located at 1 Washington St. for the “One-Stop Passport Shop.” The Town Clerk’s office will provide applications and will take the photos required for a U.S. passport.

New Programs in Place to Assist in Hempstead School System | Print |  E-mail

After a March fight at Hempstead High School, new programs are being implemented to help students get along. Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall, Assistant Superintendent of Hempstead School system Julius Brown, and Hempstead High School Principal Chy Davidson all agree that tensions are not as high between certain ethnic groups as it appears to the public.

The U.S. Justice Department has come to the Hempstead schools to assess faculty and encourage students to participate in group counseling. After the 60-student fight that occurred at Hempstead High School on March 8, the district implemented new programs to aid students and faculty in providing a safer environment for students.

The Village of Hempstead turned down a request for funds for a parade at its Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday evening.

In the public hearing at Village Hall, Comite Parada y Festival Centroamericano asked for $41,000 to conduct a parade and festival on Sunday, Sept. 12. The board granted the parade permit, but didn't authorize the funding and decided to discuss it again at the next meeting on Friday, Apr. 2.
