A recent study called Hunger in America 2010 shows that both Nassau and Suffolk County are struggling through this economic downturn. This year 283,700 hungry Long Islanders, including 110,000 children require emergency food assistance.

The 2010-2011 academic school year might see a drastic reduction in Nassau BOCES programs, officials say.

In this uncertain economy, the Nassau Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) is seeing an uneven trend in the number of children who are coming into their programs. As the 2009- 2010 school year draws to a close, school districts in Nassau County face difficult times with low budget increases and massive cuts to their state funding, most schools are scrambling to find ways just to keep afloat. Some have resorted to cutting programs that they can no longer afford like BOCES.

Garden City voters have rejected a proposed 2010-11 school district budget that called for spending $98,275,256, an increase of 3.21 percent over this year's budget.

These students are implementing Twitter in their classroom through learning and studying George Orwell's "Animal Farm." Education is moving in a new direction through the use of tools like this under the direction of educators like George Haines, technology teacher at Saints Philip and James. ST.JAMES - George Haines (@oline73), a technology teacher at St. Philip & James Catholic School of Long Island, and his eighth grade class presented at Jeff Pulver’s 140 Conference April 21 in New York City, and drew a standing ovation with a performance and presentation of their learning process with the social-media tool, Twitter.

Paterson Calls for Stiffer DWI Penalties for New York Print E-mail

Gov. Paterson proposed new legislation Tuesday that would strengthen the penalties for driving while intoxicated in New York.

The legislation would increase the mandatory sentence for a person convicted of a second D.W.I. within 10 years of their first incident from five days imprisonment to 30 days. Paterson’s proposed legislation also would extend the penalty for an individual convicted of three or more D.W.I. offenses within a 10-year period from 10 days incarceration to 90 days.
